No to Workplace Discrimination

Are you being treated differently at work? If so, is it because of your race, sex, age, disability, national origin or religion? Wondering what other kinds of discrimination are illegal? Get the facts on workplace discrimination here.

Discrimination may occur in many different forms and in various ways. You might have a “gut feeling” that you were discriminated against. But how can you tell if you have a valid case? Anti-discrimination laws make it illegal for an employer to take adverse employment action against you if you are a member of a protected class, or category of persons. Not all types of discrimination are protected under the federal anti-discrimination laws. Also, while the federal laws protect you against workplace discrimination, it is often very difficult to prove that discrimination occurred.

6-6-EEO-Statement

The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) is a federal law enforcement agency, that enforces laws against workplace discrimination. The EEOC investigates discrimination complaints based on an individual’s race, color, national origin, religion, sex, age, disability, genetic information, and retaliation for reporting, participating in, and/or opposing a discriminatory practice. In 2011, the Commission included “sex-stereotyping” of lesbian, gay, and bisexual individuals as a form of sex discrimination illegal under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. In 2012, the Commission expanded protection provided by Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 to transgender status and gender identity. The Commission also mediates and settles thousands of discrimination complaints each year prior to their investigation. The EEOC is also empowered to file discrimination suits against employers on behalf of alleged victims and to adjudicate claims of discrimination brought against federal agencies.

PCS Consultants, Inc. provides basic EEO training that can be tailored for both managers and/or employees. This training provides an overview of the workplace EEO laws that cover all employees. In addition, attendees will learn about the specific EEO laws including the Human Rights Act. This training consists of lectures to help managers and employees comply with the guidelines that constitute non-discriminatory behavior in the workplace.

What Does Safety in the Workplace Mean to You?

We all have a role to play in making a safe and healthy workplace.

If someone were to ask you why safety is important, how would you respond? You may “know” that it’s important to keep safety in mind as we go about your daily activities, but how would you explain the reasons why this is the case. Here are some things to think about.

36413126_l-800x533

work accident, workplace accident, occupational accident, or accident at work is a “discrete occurrence in the course of work, which leads to physical or mental harm”. According to an article about health and safety by the International Labour Organization (ILO), more than 2.3 million deaths per year die as a result of occupational accidents or work-related diseases. That is roughly 6,300 people daily317 million accidentsoccur on the job annually; many of these resulting in extended absences from work. The human cost of this unwanted trial is huge and the economic burden of poor occupational safety and health practices is estimated at 4% of global Gross Domestic Product each year.

Employers and employees need to set goals around health and safety and then work together as a team to achieve them. Health and safety in the workplace should be at the front of everyone’s minds. To have a safe workplace, everyone within a company must be involved. Employees can be encouraged to review their work areas to ensure no hazards are present. Hazards that they cannot remove or repair should be reported to management.

Employers must:

  • be responsible for providing a safe working environment
  • ensure you are properly trained and supervised so you can work safely
  • work with you to:
  • identify hazards in the workplace, and
  • ensure that those hazards are eliminated, isolated or minimised.
  • eliminate hazards where possible, depending on how much harm it could cause and how difficult and expensive it would be. Where a hazard cannot be eliminated you have the right to know about the hazard and what you need to do (or not do) to work safely.

As an employee, you can make your workplace safer by:

  • being involved in processes to improve health and safety
  • sticking to correct procedures and using the right equipment
  • wearing protective clothing and equipment
  • helping new employees, trainees and visitors to the workplace understand the right safety practices and why the practices exist, and
  • communicating any safety concerns to your employer.

PCS Consultants, Inc. is your one-stop resource for a wide variety of safety and health solutions. We offer a breadth of services that help you navigate through the complexities of safety compliance.

  • Review current safety practices and ensure safety compliance
  • Develop awareness programs that will eliminate or minimize your company’s safety hazards
  • Perform job site Safety assessments and recommend compliance requirements as necessary
  • Serve as the liaison between the company, federal, and state agencies in an effort to minimized liabilities and reduce potential exposures

When a workplace is safe, workers feel more comfortable and confident when they are in that environment. Productivity gets a boost, and profit margins follow suit. Absenteeism also drops when employers take steps to implement an effective safety program.

The Secret to Attracting and Retaining Employee

In light of today’s economic landscape, it’s more important than ever for companies to have happy and productive employees. When employees are loyal and engaged in the company, profits are higher. Conversely, when people feel unmotivated or undervalued, the company suffers. Additionally, studies show that engaged employees miss less work, perform better, and are more supportive of changes and willing to make them happen.

Defensive Driving: Prepared for the Worst

Most employees travel the roads every day… in cars, vans or trucks… many of them on company business. Each year, traffic accidents claim over 30,000 lives and cause more than a million serious injuries. In fact, motor vehicle crashes are the number one cause of death on the job.

Speeding on the Highway

Motor vehicle crashes are the No. 1 cause of occupational fatalities and the leading cause of death for ages 2-39 and ages 50-72. Plus, the increasing number of new drivers and vehicles on the road creates a continuing need for defensive driving training across all age groups. In accordance with the California Labor Code, employers must ensure that employees receive general safe and healthy work practices training and specific instructions with respect to workplace hazards associated with their job assignments. Driving a vehicle has its inherent risks; therefore, affected employees must meet the State’s DDT requirements. All state employees who frequently drive on state business should successfully complete an approved defensive driver training course at least once every four (4) years, in accordance with the State Administrative Manual (SAM) Section 0751 & 0752.

PCS Consultants, Inc. trains thousands in defensive driving techniques, with more than 2,000 participants annually. We were one of the best organization to offer defensive driving programs, and we’ve continued to innovate and set the standards in the field ever since.  We are committed to ensuring that people get what they need from PCS to drive defensively—knowledge, skills and perspective that will help them continue to prevent injuries and save even more lives. We continue to lead and join with other public and private sectors to educate and advocate for best practices in driver safety.

Our goal is to save even more lives by educating not only teens and parents of new drivers but, each and everyone of us who share our nation’s highways.

Emergencies Happen, Are You Ready?

It has often been said that if something can go wrong, someday it will. And if we haven’t prepared for the possibility, the results can be devastating. That’s what Emergency Planning is all about. Emergencies can come at us from many directions. They can be caused by natural disasters such as floods, earthquakes… even snowstorms. They can happen because we make a mistake, or there is a leak or spill of a hazardous material. Fires and explosions can be caused by anything from sparks from a piece of equipment to throwing a cigarette on the floor. And most of these emergencies can occur at any time, usually when we least expect them.

1-13

The lack of an emergency plan could lead to severe losses such as multiple casualties and possible financial collapse of the organization.An attitude of “it can’t happen here” may be present. People may not be willing to take the time and effort to examine the problem. However, emergency planning is an important part of company operation.

Since emergencies will occur, preplanning is necessary to prevent possible disaster. An urgent need for rapid decisions, shortage of time, and lack of resources and trained personnel can lead to chaos during an emergency. Time and circumstances in an emergency mean that normal channels of authority and communication cannot be relied upon to function routinely. The stress of the situation can lead to poor judgement resulting in severe losses.

PCS’ customizable training program on “Emergency Planning” assist facilities in complying with these regulations and help them prepare for potential emergency situations. Topics covered include:

* Types of emergencies.
* The emergency plan.
* The “crisis management team”.
* Evacuation.
* Communications.
* The role of outside agencies
* Practice sessions and drills and more.
